History Preceding NDMA
The idea of forming a motor sports club in the Port Augusta area was more or less conceived in a car on the way home from a similar club meeting in Whyalla back in January 2007. After some extensive research trying to gauge local interest in forming something new and fresh in the Port Augusta region we decided to do some mild media and word of mouth advertising and subsequently held our initial meeting at the Stirling North Progress Association in January 2007. Needless to say we were fairly excited with the turn up with some 50 people attending. We initiated a fairly basic survey on the night and from that came up with around 20 people who had experienced interest in being involved with the new steering committee.
The NDMA Now
Northern District Motorsport Association is still going strong to this day and is enjoying its 12th year.
With around 200 members, 7 extremely successful Port Augusta Motor Shows and two Port Augusta Billy Cart events to its name along with many great cruises and social functions to date. The Billy Cart & Port Augusta Motor Show events won consecutive Port Augusta Community Event of the Year awards at the Australia Day Awards in 2018 & 2019.
The club has managed to build a reasonably healthy bank account in that time which is a result of a lot of hard work by its dedicated members and sponsors but still finds itself searching for that elusive piece of land on which to build its planned club rooms and motor sports complex. The club certainly faces some large challenges on that front and hopefully with some good luck and some good management into the future these obstacles will be overcome.
With the recent changes in Historic Registration laws, NDMA has worked closely with the governing body “Federation of Historic Motor Clubs of SA Inc” to offer reduced registration to eligible members. Approval was gained in late 2017 and we now have in excess of 140 vehicles on Club Rego for our members with 5 Authorised Officers available to assist our members.
